    WHY NOT ENGLAND?

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Mandla Zwane has explained why Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi may not succeed if he chooses to join a club in the English Premier League.

According to Zwane, Mbokazi's height might be a disadvantage because, in England, he says, taller defenders tend to perform better.

    ZWANE'S ADVICE

"Given the current situation at Manchester United, Mbokazi could easily fit into their line-up," Zwane said, as per KickOff.

“However, the English Premier League tends to favour taller centre-backs, so he might excel more in countries like Spain, Portugal, and France, where shorter players are often used."

"I believe Mbokazi is ready to go to Europe right now. He will continue to mature with time. Just look at Lamine Yamal, who was only 15 or 16 when he played for the first team [Barcelona]."

    CHALLENGES IN EUROPE

Zwane has, however, stated that Mbokazi is ready to overcome challenges he might face if he signs for a club in Europe.

"There won't be a language barrier for Mbokazi in Europe because football speaks a universal language. As long as he maintains his determination, he will succeed anywhere. He has already demonstrated his ability by moving from KZN to Johannesburg," Zwane stated.

"Being in an unfamiliar environment motivates you to take your work seriously, and adjusting to a new setting shouldn't be a concern. I was quite young when I left South Africa to go overseas, but I adapted well," he continued.

"When you understand the challenges back home, you’ll do your best to adjust in a foreign country."

    HOW MBOKAZI ESTABLISHED HIMSELF

The Pirates captain has become one of the dependable figures for both the Soweto giants and the national team.

His solidity was recently witnessed when he was deployed to defend against both Lesotho and Nigeria in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The centre-back was specifically impressive against a star-studded Super Eagles side; he was calm, equal to the challenge, and was later praised by Hugo Broos.

He was also named Man of the Match after helping South Africa collect a point against Nigeria in the high-stakes encounter in Bloemfontein.
