Orlando Pirates legend Benedict Vilakazi tells Khanyisa Mayo 'to relax' and learn not to 'add sugar' after blunder that cost Kaizer Chiefs against AmaZulu FC

    Mayo's big blunder

Khanyisa Mayo denied Kaizer Chiefs an opportunity to beat AmaZulu FC when he interfered with play while he was in an offside position. This led to Chiefs' goal being disallowed in a match that eventually ended in a 1-1 Premier Soccer League draw at FNB Stadium on Wednesday.

Had the former Cape Town City striker not touched the ball, Pule Mmodi's effort would have stood as a goal.

Former Orlando Pirates attacker Benedict Vilakazi has shared his views on the incident which contributed to extending Chiefs' winless run in the league to three games.

Mayo didn't read the situation, says Vilakazi

“That’s a difficult moment for him that as a striker you want your name to be there in terms of goal scoring,” said Vilakazi as per iDiski Times.
“But unfortunately, he didn’t read the whole action around. You know there are games where you need to hold on because in this game allow that ball to go.
“I mean it’s already there in the line and doesn’t need you to cross the line unless you are saying you can see someone or wind obstructing that’s why you had to put your leg there.
“Unfortunately, Mayo is a typical striker that wants to score, and I even said to Junior [Khanye] that I too once did something like that as well. Khauleza had hit it and I came and finished it off, but the difference was that I was onside," added Pirates' all-time top goal-scorer.
“I saw Mmodi’s mouth saying ‘tlogela monna why o e tshwere‘ [leave it man why did you touch it]. I think it’s just striker instinct, where you want to score, then you see the ball going in that direction, and you want to touch it and say you scored.
“Mayo just needs to relax and learn that some of the action doesn’t need you to add sugar.”

A lot to prove for Mayo

Even when he was in top form, being the PSL top goal-scorer and after going to Algeria, Mayo still struggled to win the admiration of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.

Wednesday's incident might see the Belgian coach finding words to justify why he has been overlooking the Chiefs striker.

However, that leaves Mayo with a task to dust himself and show character to prove wrong those who are criticising him.

    Opportunity for redemption?

Mayo was not the only villain against AmaZulu, but so was Glody Lilepo, who had his penalty saved by Usuthu goalkeeper Darren Johnson.

The two forwards will now have to pick themselves up when Chiefs clash with Stellenbosch away in the Carling Knockout Round of 16 on Sunday.
