    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates centre-back Nkosinathi Sibisi will captain Bafana Bafana during the international friendly matches against Tanzania and Mozambique.

South Africa take on the Taifa Stars on Friday before facing their neighbours next Tuesday.

Sibisi is part of the nine Pirates players who made it into Hugo Broos' squad, including the likes of Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Simphiwe Selepe, Mohau Nkota, Relebohile Mofokeng, Thalente Mbatha, Deano van Rooyen, Patrick Maswanganyi and goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.

    WHAT BROOS SAID

“The performance is the most important thing. We want to win the two games, and we will do everything to win them," Broos told Safa media.

"But more importantly, it is the performance of the players, certainly the new players and again, I will not put pressure on them. They just have to play their game and then we will see, evaluate what we are going to do in the future.

“The opponents are not the strongest ones, but certainly not the weakest of Africa. Both countries were at the Afcon last year, so even Mozambique is in a good space to go to the World Cup next year," added the Belgian.

“So this means there will be a good opponent in the two games, and therefore, again, I think it’s a good opportunity for everyone to prove themselves, to show their qualities.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sibisi is not new to the role of captain as he was Pirates' second vice-captain last season.

But he skippered the Buccaneers in several games in the absence of Innocent Maela and Tapelo Xoki.

Being entrusted with the leadership role by Broos shows how he has cemented his place in the Bafana setup.

    WHAT NEXT FOR BAFANA?

New Bafana players like Mbokazi, Selepe, Nkota, Sinoxolo Kwayiba, Tshepang Moremi, Yanela Mbuthuma and Samukelo Kabini will be trying to impress Broos and be called for the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

Broos will also be assessing his players to see if they are quality material to go to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
