    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates lost their only game of the Caf Champions League campaign at a crucial moment, falling 3-2 to Pyramids and missing out on a place in the final.

Mohau Nkota and Relebohile Mofokeng were the goalscorers for the Buccaneers in Cairo.

The two youngsters have been a shining light this season, contributing nine goals between them — with Mofokeng scoring five and Nkota four.

Their performances have earned praise from Pirates legend Benedict Vilakazi, who highlighted them as standout players during the campaign.

Vilakazi emphasised that despite the disappointment, the team and especially the young talents should be proud of their efforts on the continental stage.

The experience gained could prove invaluable for the future of Orlando Pirates.

    WHAT VILAKAZI SAID

“Our two young boys, Mofokeng and Nkota they made us proud,” said Tso as reported by iDiski Times.

“They did very well. They should be proud of themselves. It wasn’t an easy journey for them to get to the semi-finals. I mean, they played against the best. Pyramids is not an easy team; they are number one in the Egyptian league.

“The way they have played for me, it’s more than enough, they should be proud of themselves. The good thing is that they have experience. When they come back next season, they’ve got more experience and understand better what it takes to play in the Champions League.

“And I’m saying to the boys, walk tall, you did wonders, you managed to get to this stage, you should be proud.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With Jose Riveiro set to leave Orlando Pirates at the end of the season, the players he promoted — like Nkota and Mofokeng — will want to give him a fitting farewell.

Pirates are still competing for silverware as they prepare for the Nedbank Cup final.

They also remain in the hunt for the league title, although they will need to close the gap on Mamelodi Sundowns.

Ending the season with a trophy and a strong league finish would be a dignified send-off for Riveiro.

    WHAT NEXT FOR PIRATES?

Pirates must now turn their attention to the league as they face Sekhukhune United next, a team also pushing for a top-three finish.

Closing the points gap is vital if they hope to catch Sundowns and finish the season on a high note.

The Nedbank Cup final will also be a key focus as they seek to bring silverware home.
