  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    South Africa international Cassius Mailula has completed a surprise transfer to KV Kortrijk from Toronto FC.

    The diminutive attacker has joined the Belgian side on loan until the end of the season with an option to purchase him from the MLS club.

    WHAT WAS SAID?

    "KV Kortrijk is pleased to announce the arrival of South African Cassius Mailula (24). The quick and agile attacking midfielder will join our club until the end of the season. KV Kortrijk has also secured a purchase option," a club statement read.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Mailula will now realise his dream of playing in Europe after moving to Kortrijk, a club which once had South African players Lars Veldwijk & Darren Keet on their books.

    The 24-year-old joins his compatriots Shandre Campbell and Kurt Abrahams, who are currently plying their trade in Belgium.

    Campbell features for both Club Brugge in the top tier and their feeder side, Club NXT, in the Challenger Pro League.

    While Abrahams turns out for Beveren in the Challenger Pro League.

    WHAT’S NEXT?

    Mailula will soon leave Canada for Belgium, where he is set to start life as a Kortrijk player.

    He will be hoping to enjoy regular game time at coach Michiel Jonckheere and earn a Bafana call-up ahead of December's 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco.
