  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs could have been handed a green light to finally make moves and sign Asanele Velebayi after the Premier Soccer League Dispute Resolution Chamber declared the winger a free agent.

The dispute chamber has now rendered a judgement after the winger and Cape Town Spurs, his immediate former side, were locked in a legal dispute over the player's contract.

In the case that has been ongoing for two months, Velebayi's representatives argued that the player was no longer bound by Spurs' contract since the club suffered relegation to an amateur league.

This is a position Spurs contested, and the issue escalated to the corridors of justice, and a ruling has now been made.

    WHAT PSL DRC SAID

"The application is heard on an urgent basis in terms of clause 45.5," a ruling delivered and signed by PSL DRC's chairperson, Mosupi Mashele, stated.

"The applicant is declared a free agent. The counter-application is dismissed since the applicant succeeded. There is no order as to costs," it added.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Amid the legal tussle between the two parties, Velebayi has been massively linked with Chiefs reports indicating the Soweto giants were only waiting for the outcome of this case.

From the onset of the case, Spurs' chances of winning the case against the winger looked slim, judging from the NSL rules, that is. According to the rules, once a club is relegated to the amateur league, its players are immediately declared free agents.

A clause that Velebayi's representatives heavily relied on in their arguments.

Spurs have been on a downward spiral; they suffered back-to-back relegations from the top flight and then from the Motsepe Foundation Championship, South Africa’s second tier, and recently to the ABC Motsepe League.

    WHAT NEXT FOR VELEBAYI?

Velebayi is now free to enter into talks with a club of his choice, with Chiefs tipped to be his next destination.

Meanwhile, the cases involving Velebayi's teammates at Spurs, Luke Baartman and Liam Bern, are yet to be ruled on. Baartman has also been linked with Chiefs, while Bern is understood to be closing in on a move to AmaZulu.
