Newly-recruited midfielder identified as Kaizer Chiefs player who can hurt Mamelodi Sundowns - 'I believe Thabo Cele has what it takes to lead us to victory'

Mamelodi Sundowns aim to extend their lead at the top of the log, with Kaizer Chiefs standing in their way. Chiefs have been inconsistent in the league and suffered a heavy defeat to SuperSport United in their last outing.

The point difference between the two sides is 23, despite both playing the same number of matches. Sundowns have already beaten Chiefs twice this season—once in the league and once in the Carling Knockout.

They will be looking to complete a treble of victories over their rivals. However, former Amakhosi midfielder Frank Makua believes Chiefs can finally break their losing streak. He is placing his hopes on newly signed midfielder Thabo Cele to play a crucial role in securing a long-awaited win for the Glamour Boys.

"We're struggling, but I trust them to rise to the occasion like they did against Pirates," says Makua, as reported by KickOff.com.

"I believe they will fix the mistakes they made against SuperSport United, even though it will be difficult since Sundowns are in good form.

"The challenge is that Sundowns are highly motivated when playing against Kaizer Chiefs. They don't take anything for granted. However, I have faith that Chiefs will perform better this time around.

"I feel strongly that Chiefs will not lose to Sundowns this time," he continues.

"I don’t see them losing to Sundowns.

"In these types of games, players need to perform regardless of their form. Motivation shouldn’t be an issue.

"Many people think Sundowns will easily defeat Chiefs, but they fail to realise that football is full of surprises.

"The Chiefs players must approach the game as a team - no one should try to play individually or be a hero. It's important to stick to the coach’s game plan.

"I believe Thabo Cele has what it takes to lead us to victory, although it won't be easy for Kaizer Chiefs. They shouldn't let their heads drop if they concede an early goal. Once that happens against Sundowns, they can capitalize and finish you off."

Kaizer Chiefs last defeated Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021 with a 2-1 victory, thanks to Dumisani Zuma’s goal, after Gastón Sirino had opened the scoring and Mosa Lebusa scored an own goal.

In the three meetings between the two teams in 2024, the Brazilians have netted 11 goals while Chiefs have only managed two. Sundowns have already beaten Nasreddine Nabi twice since his arrival, piling pressure on the Tunisian-born coach.

With their impressive form, Masandawana will aim to continue their dominance over Chiefs. Another victory will push them closer to securing the league title early. Amakhosi, on the other hand, will be desperate to turn the tide and salvage pride against their biggest rivals.

Mamelodi Sundowns now shift focus to their next fixture against a revitalized Sekhukhune United under Lehlohonolo Seema. They will be aiming to complete a double over Babina Noko and widen the gap between them and second-placed Orlando Pirates.

The game will take place in Polokwane, where Sundowns will look to maintain their unbeaten run. United will be eager to cause an upset and strengthen their position on the table.
