After Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United could not be separated in regulation time at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday, it took Jayden Adams' last-minute strike in extra-time to send the Brazilians to the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

Sundowns made six changes to the team that lost to Orlando Pirates before the Fifa international break and were forced to throw in their five regulars in the second half.

But Sekhukhune remained hard to crack before Adams struck in the 119th minute as the match appeared to be headed for penalty shootouts.

It was the two teams' first-ever meeting in Cup competitions and both sides had disallowed goals earlier on before the game ended 1`-0 in favour of Masandawana.

    THE MVP

In what was his first match of the season, Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner was solid between the sticks with some brilliant saves.

His heroics in goal frustrated Sundowns and kept the Tswane giants at bay and that could make coach Eric Tinkler start him ahead of Ali Badra Sangare for the rest of the season.

Even with Sekhukhune being the losing side, Leaner deservedly won the Man of the Match award.

    THE BIG LOSER

Sekhukhune might be rueing their decision to fix what was not broken when they fired Lehlohonolo Seema and replaced him with Eric Tinkler.

They are now out of the Nedbank Cup and have also lost footing in their Premier Soccer League campaign.
