    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates sensation Relebohile Mofokeng has been hitting the right buttons since making his senior debut.

The ongoing 2024/25 campaign is so far his best; the 20-year-old has 10 goals and 12 assists in the 36 games played across all competitions and just last weekend scored a quickfire brace to help his team to a crucial 2-1 victory over log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

His exploits, since last season, have seen him get recognition from the continent and the world at large.

Mofokeng has been linked with moves to Scotland, Belgium, Egypt and England.

Spanish heavyweights Barcelona were also reported to be interested in the versatile attacker.

Lebohang Mokoena believes the time is ripe for the Bafana Bafana international to get a new challenge in Europe but in a good team.

He has, however, warned against getting distracted by baseless rumours.

    WHAT MOKOENA SAID

“I think that would be a decision from his agent,” Mokoena told iDiski Times.

“You know, his father played the game, so he probably knows. I think he’s also under good leadership at Orlando Pirates.

“If he gets an opportunity to go overseas, why not? Obviously, it’s going to be growth for him. Still a lot to improve from his side. So, if he leaves maybe at the end of the season, I think it would be great for him personally, for him to grow as a footballer.

“Sometimes, you get distracted by these offers that are not even on the table and you find that there’s not even one [real] offer. But the way we hype things up, we start distracting the players.

“So, he must just focus on playing and the most important thing is for him to stay injury-free, to develop his game and somebody will come knocking at the door.

“But if there is a move, I would prefer a Spanish league, I would prefer maybe a Portuguese league, French league, more technical leagues, which he can grow from there," Mokoena concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

With his performances, the chances of Mofokeng leaving Pirates for a European team in the next transfer window are high.

It is up to the youngsters' handlers to ensure they don't make a decision that will kill his career and bright future.
