  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns have a good record against Al Ahly, and at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, they were riding on that ahead of the Saturday game.

However, spoils were shared in the first leg of the Caf Champions League semi-finaltie.

It was worse for Masandawana, who didn't register a shot on target the entire game.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In recent meetings, Sundowns have not lost a game at the Cairo International Stadium.

They have won once and drawn twice in the last three meetings across all competitions.

The Red Devils lost 2-1 in Group C of the Caf Champions League game against Orlando Pirates recently.

Coach Miguel Cardoso believes his team can cause an upset in Egypt to reach the final.

    WHAT CARDOSO SAID

“It’s important to understand that not conceding is always very important in these kinds of matches,” the tactician said after the match

“Of course, scoring is also very important; we got one objective, we didn’t get the second one.

“I think the first half was better than the second one, we played more in trying to achieve it, but I think that everybody understood that the positioning from Ahly on the pitch is a very tough one," Cardoso continued.

"They use four centre-backs, defending with a line of six [players] most of the time, so very deep.

“We tried different ways, we tried to find the spaces, we knew that it’s going to be a match for two-three opportunities, and we had to score out of them.

“We didn’t [score], we are alive, we are struggling, and I believe that we can finish the job over there in Cairo," he concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

Cardoso will have to work on his attacking department to stand a chance of delivering in Egypt.

However, it will not be easy against the defending champions, who are hoping to win the competition for the third time in a row.

Just like Orlando Pirates, Sundowns are chasing a second star.
