    WHAT HAPPENED?

South Africa Under-20 coach Raymond Mdaka has named his provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations.

Cape Town City's Emile Witbooi has been missing, together with Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Siyabonga Mabena, who is nursing a long-term injury.

Also missing is Club Brugge star Shandre Campbell, who was key in the Afcon qualifiers at Cosafa level.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mdaka's selection represents what the Premier Soccer League has to offer in young, quality players.

Also included in Mdaka's squad are Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi and the Mamelodi Sundowns duo of Asekho Tiwani and Kutwano Letlhaku.

However, he will have to prove if his players can be trusted to form the core of a future Bafana Bafana squad that can win the Africa Cup of Nations and also qualify to participate at the Fifa World Cup.

It is to be seen if Chiefs will be able to release their players like Mfundo Vilakazi for Afcon after failing to let them take part at the Cosafa Under-20.

    WHAT NEXT?

Amajita's major goal would be to qualify for the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup and that requires just reaching the semi-finals of Afcon.

It is a stage South Africa last participated in 2019 with a squad that includes household names like Njabulo Blom, Oswin Appollis, Lyle Foster, Luke le Roux and Kabomelo Kodisang.
