Mary Earps wins 2023 BBC Sports Personality of the Year after helping England reach Women's World Cup final and starring for Man Utd in WSL

Earps beat England cricketer Stuart Broad and heptathlete Katerina Johnson-Thompson to scoop the award at the star-studded ceremony at Media City in Salford. The Manchester United and England star became the seventh footballer and the first goalkeeper to win the prize in its 70-year history.

"I feel a bit sick. First of all, I’d like to say how humbled I am to be on a list of such incredible athletes. This is just, wow. It’s not been the easiest journey & I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without incredible people in my corner."

Mary Earps' starring role in England's run to the World Cup final this summer saw her awarded the Golden Glove. And the recognition just kept coming with Earps named the SJA Sportswoman of the Year, the BBC Women's Footballer of the Year and the Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year. Her popularity even forced sportswear giant Nike into a U-turn on the decision not to sell replica versions of her shirt.

Earps' win was a second consecutive win for the Lionesses. Beth Mead took last year's award after scoring six goals in England's epic Euro 2022 triumph.

The WSL is currently on its winter break which should give Earps a chance for a well-earned rest at the end of a hectic year and maybe a few weeks to decide how exactly to arrange the sheer number of awards she has accumulated in her stellar year.
