Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 1-1 draw by Golden Arrows in the Premier Soccer League fixture staged at Mpumalanga Stadium on Wednesday night.

Coach Manqoba Mngqithi was keen on helping his team, Abafana Bes'thende avoid another heavy loss against the Brazilians.

A controversial free-kick, in the 31st minute, ended with Keenan Phillips heading in Sbonelo Cele's inviting set-piece to give his team the lead.

However, the defender was unfortunate to handle the ball in his 18-yard area in the 44th minute, and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

Lucas Ribeiro played a beautiful Panenka to level the scores. It was his 13th goal in the ongoing campaign.

After 21 games, Sundowns have collected 55 points, 16 more than second-placed Orlando Pirates who have four games at hand.

The Soweto giants beat Chippa United by a solitary goal in another PSL game played on Wednesday night.

    THE MVP

Arrows right-back Keenan Phillips was a joy to watch, thanks to his energetic runs both offensively and defensively.

He was rewarded with a goal in the first half and looked lively on and off the ball.

Unfortunate to go out with about 10 minutes to go after sustaining what looked like a hamstring injury.

    THE BIG LOSER

Uncharacteristically, Jayden Adams struggled to have an impact in the first half.

He looked lost and was eventually subbed for Teboho Mokoena. Fatigue maybe?

  • Lucas Suarez, Mamelodi Sundowns

    WHAT COMES NEXT?

Masandawana will have a breather from the league this weekend when they play Sekhukhune United in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final.

The game will be staged at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.

Arrows will have a quiet weekend until Wednesday, when they will play Polokwane City in the PSL.
