    WHAT HAPPENED

Mamelodi Sundowns struggled to break down Golden Arrows on Wednesday afternoon in the Premier Soccer League game staged at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

Junior Dion scored the only goal to hand the hosts their first win against Sundowns, across all competitions, since November 2019.

Once again, the Brazilians struggled for creativity in the midfield and were evenly matched by Manqoba Mngqithi's men.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since the exit of Lucas Ribeiro, coupled with an injury to Themba Zwane, the Brazilians' depth in midfield, especially in the final third, has been lacking.

With creativity being an issue as well, the management has been working on getting a quality signing.

In the recently closed South African transfer window, Masandawana added Fawaaz Basadien, Tsiki Ntsabeleng, on loan from FC Dallas, and Nuno Santos.

The last two are offensive players, but Cardoso has confirmed free-agent Miguel Reisinho, who played with ex-Sundowns star Haashim Domingo at Vitoria B between 2017 and 2018, is set to be unveiled.

    WHAT CARDOSO SAID

“I think in the next one or two days, he will [be] unveiled. We tried to reinforce the team, it was clear that we needed to reinforce the team in front and it was hard work, tough, until the last moment [of the transfer window],” he responded when asked about the player.

“These kinds of players, with such quality, it’s not easy [to sign them], and by the history, there’s not much history of players coming from Europe from such level, entering South Africa; even the African market.

"So the business was difficult, let’s see if we can finalise, I think everything is in order to allow us to announce him, and together with Nuno and with the players we have, we had, and the ones who went to the [U20 World Cup], when we have the whole group we will be stronger," Cardoso concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

Last season, the 26-year-old played 29 top-tier games for his former team Boavista, scoring five goals in the process, including a strike against heavyweights Porto.

If Reisinho adapts fast, then Sundowns, once again, might go all the way to secure another PSL crown for the ninth time in a row.
