    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns have continued to make waves in the January transfer window, adding another talented player to their squad. Cesar Luis Merlo reported that Lucas Matías Suárez Scalarea, a former Argentina Under-20 international, has joined the Tshwane giants on loan from CA Talleres, with the potential for a permanent move in the future.

Suárez, a 29-year-old left-footed centre-back, plays in the Argentine Primera División and brings valuable experience to bolster the Sundowns defense as they challenge for the league title and the Nedbank Cup. His arrival at Chloorkop is expected to strengthen Miguel Cardoso’s side as they aim to continue their dominance in both domestic and continental competitions.

In a related move, Talleres have reportedly opted to terminate Matías Esquivel's loan deal, and he is expected to return to Sundowns shortly. The club’s transfer activities do not end here, with two significant deals close to completion in January.

Bafana Bafana internationals Jayden Adams and Lebo Mothiba are said to be on the verge of joining the defending champions. With these key acquisitions, Sundowns are clearly gearing up for a successful second half of the season, strengthening their squad for both local and international challenges.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Suarez’s arrival at Sundowns and Saveedra's return means the club may need to offload Erwin Saavedra to free up a foreign spot. Currently, Saveedra, Marcelo Allende, Lucas Ribeiro and Arthur Sales occupy the available slots.

As a result, Sundowns will have to make a tough decision on the Bolivian as he has not had an impact since joining. This move reflects the club’s careful planning as they strengthen their squad for the rest of the season.

    WHAT IS NEXT FOR SUNDOWNS?

Sundowns are preparing for a crucial Caf Champions League group stage match against AS FAR, where a victory is essential.

Masandawana are currently in position two with eight points and a draw would be enough to secure a place in the last eight of the continental competition.

The PSL champions are expected to announce the signing of Suarez soon.
