    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns made four signings this season; locally, they brought in Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch and Tsiki Ntsabeleng (on loan from FC Dallas).

They then added two foreigners: Nuno Santos joined from Vitoria Guimaraes SC, alongside free agent Miguel Reisinho.

With Masandawana desperate to make a statement internationally, they have always gone the extra mile to bring in the players they need to succeed.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Premier Soccer League allows its members to sign at most five foreign players; already Masandawana have Reisinho, Santos, Marcelo Allende and Arthur Sales on their list for the season.

Peter Shalulile, Denis Onyango, and Divine Lunga have been registered as locals, while Matias Esquivel and Abubeker Nasir have been loaned to AE Kifisia and AmaTuks, respectively.

With Ugandan goalkeeper Ismail Watenga not registered, it means there is one more slot to be filled, and coach Miguel Cardoso has revealed that it will be utilised in the January Transfer Window.

    WHAT CARDOSO SAID

“Of course, we still have one spot for a foreigner, and we will leave for the market in January to see where in that moment the team will be and if they will need to reinforce,” the Portuguese tactician told the media.

“Let’s see if we are going to use it or not. But we are very active, not only in the South African market, but in the African market.

“We have a target, of course, we follow the players, we scout the players, we scout the teams, we watch, and that is our scouting department, headed by Mr Flemming Berg, in agreement with the technical staff," Cardoso continued.

“Because always any player that come from us or from the group that he leads, which we cross, we discuss, we analyse, we report, then it is followed by the board of the club that takes the decision on the business.

“It is like any club that is structured has to work," he concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

Having failed to make a statement in the MTN8, Cardodo and his charges are desperate to make an impact in the Premier Soccer League and other domestic competitions.

However, the prize is the CAF Champions League, which has eluded them in subsequent seasons.

They reached the final in the 2025/26 edition before falling to Pyramids; the Brazilians will definitely be targeting the crown in the ongoing campaign.
