BackpagepixRushine De Reuck joined Israeli side Maccabi Petah Tikva in the January transfer window. He moved on loan to get more game time and revive his career. This is his second stint in Europe after playing in Portugal as a teenager.
The defender previously played for ASD Academy before returning to South Africa. Injuries limited his game time at Mamelodi Sundowns, where he only played six games this season.
Since joining Masandawana from Maritzburg United, he has made over seventy appearances. The 29-year-old recently spoke to GOAL about his move and how he is adjusting to life in the Middle East.
BackpagepixRushine De Reuck, who is on loan at Maccabi Petah Tikva from Mamelodi Sundowns, is settling in well in Israel and embracing the challenges of adapting to a new league.
Reflecting on his move, De Reuck acknowledged the difficulties of switching clubs mid-season but praised his new teammates for their warm welcome. "It’s been great, really enjoying my time here so far," he told GOAL. "Obviously, it’s always difficult to move during the January transfer, but everyone has welcomed me really well, and I’ve built really good relationships with the lads. That’s important because it will help on the pitch."
Having already featured in several matches, De Reuck is gradually adjusting to the league’s intensity and tactical demands. "Yeah, the games that I played were really good. I’m starting to find my feet and gradually getting used to the rhythm of the league," he explained.
While the tactical approach differs from what he was accustomed to in South Africa, he remains comfortable with the system. "We’re playing a different formation than I’m used to, but it’s not foreign to me. I’ve played this formation under coach Eric Tinkler and coach Fadlu Davids before, so the understanding is still there."
Comparing the two leagues, De Reuck noted the contrasts in playing style: "Both leagues are very demanding. In the PSL, there are a lot more transitions, and it’s a bit chaotic at times, with a lot of quality players who can hurt you. Here, it’s more structured, and the players are a bit more technically better on the ball. Both are very good leagues, though."
Backpagepix.Rushine De Reuck’s decision to seek more game time has already started paying off, as he is settling in well at Maccabi Petah Tikva. Having Miguel Cardoso acknowledge the Bafana Bafana defender’s request to leave Masandawana for regular minutes was a good move highlights the importance of his choice.
The defender had struggled for opportunities at Sundowns, which saw him lose his place in the national team setup. With Afcon approaching, securing consistent game time in Israel could boost his chances of reclaiming a spot in Hugo Broos’ squad.
The move has allowed him to regain confidence while adapting to a new playing style that challenges him tactically. If he continues performing well, he could soon be back in contention for Bafana Bafana selection
backpagepixSince his arrival, he has played two games for Maccabi Petah Tikva. His team is currently in 11th place with 24 points from 24 matches. They face Beitar Jerusalem at home in their next fixture. After two consecutive losses, they aim to turn their results around.
