    WHAT HAPPENED

Peter Shalulile scored his first goal of the season when Mamelodi Sundowns beat Golden Arrows 5-0 in the Carling Knockout Round of 16 last Saturday.

It was his first official goal for Masandawana since May 2024 and it left coach Manqoba Mngqithi thrilled.

    WHAT MNGQITHI SAID

“We have made it obvious that we have a responsibility to support Peter, and we have done everything we can, sometimes playing him in matches where he could be tired, we just want him to have some minutes and maybe break the curse and score,” said Mngqithi as per iDiksi Times.

“Even myself, I celebrated [his goal], because it’s very important for me that Peter is also in top form because we are going to need all our strikers going forward. And the support he’s getting from the team in general has been very good.

“I like the team that I have because I have a lot of very good boys, very sensible human beings who are compassionate, a lot of empathy, and also sympathising with Peter during these hard moments where he was not getting goals. So, it was exciting to see the reaction after he scored as well.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mngqithi has thrown his weight behind Shalulile at a time when the Namibian is still struggling for form.

He scored less than 10 Premier Soccer League goals last season and it was the first time for him to do so since the 2018-19 season when he was still at Highlands Park.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SHALULILE?

So far, Iqraam Rayners appears to have taken over as Sundowns' top marksman.

That leaves Shalulile with a task to reclaim his place in the team as the leading scorer.
