    WHAT HAPPENED?

Jayden Adams joined Mamelodi Sundowns in January and quickly cemented his place in the club’s star-studded squad. Despite fierce competition for places, he has impressed with his consistent performances and versatility.

His form earned him a recall to Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad, where he scored two crucial goals against Benin and Lesotho during the last international window. Adams’ growth has not gone unnoticed by teammates and fans alike.

Iqraam Rayners, who knows Adams from their days at Stellenbosch, praised his quality and work ethic, saying his rise is no surprise. Rayners believes that Adams’ potential is clear and that he’s destined for greater things abroad.

    WHAT RAYNERS SAID

“I know Jayden’s ability since [playing with him] at Stellenbosch, I know his qualities also, he’s a good player that’s fit in quickly at Sundowns, I know what he is capable of doing, I’m just happy he is here with us, it’s a good opportunity for him also moving forward [in his career],” Rayners said as reported by iDiski Times.

“He is technically good, there’s many players here that’s also good, they always help him to improve his game, they give him advice because he is still young."

While Rayners acknowledges his move will take him to greater heights, having also made the switch from Stellies this season, he believes he can still make a move abroad, given his age.

“He was 12 years old when he joined us in the First Division, he was already good, you could see there’s something there,” he added.

“And I think after the years he improved and improved, I’m happy for him, I think in the next one or two seasons he could go to Europe.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In May 2024, the 23-year-old Adams shared his dream of playing in Europe, specifically for English giants Liverpool. Since his move to Sundowns, he has played 18 matches and scored three goals, showing he's adapting well to a higher level.

His performances on both the domestic and international stages are attracting attention. Rayners echoed Adams' ambition, saying he has the ability to succeed in top European leagues. With the right guidance and continued performances, Europe seems like a realistic next step for Adams.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SUNDOWNS?

Mamelodi Sundowns now turn their attention to a massive second-leg clash in Cairo against Al Ahly. A win or scoring draw would send them to the Caf Champions League final for the first time since 2016.

The Brazilians know the magnitude of the task and will rely on players like Adams to deliver a strong away performance.
