    WHAT HAPPENED?

Bafana Bafana's road to Morocco 2025 got more complicated after a draw with Congo-Brazzaville, derailing their qualification by a game or two. With critical matches against Uganda and South Sudan ahead, they must win both to ensure progression.

However, the biggest setback came when Themba Zwane suffered a suspected Achilles injury in the second half, as confirmed by Coach Hugo Broos.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane, who is a former international spoke about the injury and what it means to Mamelodi Sundowns, Bafana Bafana and the players that will need to step into Zwane's boots while he recovers.

    WHAT LETSHOLONYANE SAID

“It’s a blow for him, the club, and the country. He’s an important player, and we wish him a speedy recovery.” Letsholonyane told GOAL.

“It was always going to be a tough game—teams always perform better at home. Having someone like Mshishi on the field is a big help because he can create those special moments that lead to goals. But football is a team sport, and nothing is ever guaranteed.”

“Any coach would love to have him when he’s fit. He’s been in great form for the national team, and his absence is definitely a setback. But this also presents a chance for other players to step up, raise their hands, and become regulars in the national setup.”

“There are a few Carling Knockout and PSL games coming up. It’s a great chance for players in that position to impress and catch the national coach’s eye," he concluded.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Zwane’s absence is a blow, it presents an opportunity for new players to step up and stake a claim in the national team.

With key matches remaining in the qualification campaign and domestic competitions underway, fringe players have the chance to impress both club and national team coaches.

Winning against Uganda and South Sudan is now non-negotiable for Bafana's Afcon 2025 hopes.

    WHAT NEXT FOR ZWANE?

With the Carling Knockout, PSL, and CAF games approaching for Mamelodi Sundowns, the loss of Themba Zwane due to injury will be keenly felt by both the club and the national team.

As he begins his recovery, the 35-year-old will focus on rehabilitation to regain his fitness and strength. His absence opens the door for other players to step up and showcase their abilities in crucial matches ahead.

For Mamelodi Sundowns, maintaining their momentum in domestic competitions will be vital as they aim for success without one of their star players.

The coaching staff will also be monitoring the squad closely, adjusting strategies to compensate for his absence while ensuring they remain competitive in the upcoming fixtures.

For Zwane himself, the immediate goal will be to heal quickly and return to the pitch, where he can contribute once again to the success of both his club and the national team.
