BackpageMayo opens up on Chiefs move
Former Cape Town City forward Khanyisa Mayo has opened up about the behind-the-scenes push that led to the move to join Kaizer Chiefs.
The South African star, who was loaned to Chiefs by CR Belouizdad, said that it was his dream to play for the Soweto giants and there was no way he was going to let that chance slip.

“To be honest, I couldn’t sleep. I said to my agent, 'Let’s make it possible.' There’s no other team I want to play for," Mayo told the club's website.
"I had other offers, but I only wanted to come back home, and Kaizer Chiefs is my home. This is where I grew up, Naturena," he added.
BackpageHow father and mother reacted
When Mayo was sure that his trip to Naturena was all but sealed, he called his mother first to deliver the news. What followed, as he describes, was celebration, as the parents were happy with the move.
“The first person I called was my mother, who was sitting with my father, and they both jumped for joy and celebrated that I would be joining my father in continuing the legacy of the club," he revealed.
"The fact that he came before me adds a bit of pressure for me, but it’s something I grew up with, so I’m used to it.”
Kaizer ChiefsHeartbreaking missed chance
Mayo's dream of playing for Chiefs would have been realised earlier, but it was not. Before he signed for the Algerian outfit, Chiefs showed interest, but Cape Town City ended up sealing the deal with CR Belouizdad.
“I was pretty sad because I wanted to come to Chiefs. I have always felt the Club is part of my DNA because my dad played here for the biggest football institution," Mayo said about the missed chance.
I wanted to emulate him and achieve success at Kaizer Chiefs. But it didn’t happen, and I realised I had to go somewhere else before I could come here, and that’s what has happened," he added.
"Now I am here.”
BackpageMayo-Chiefs connection
The connection of the Mayo family and Amakhosi is a story of a football bond that dates back to Patrick Mayo, Khanyisa's father.
Mayo Senior was a fan favourite during the 2000s, as he was part of a successful Chiefs team, and the achievements include two league titles.
Now the son has returned to Naturena, hoping to continue from where his father left the legacy.
He arrives at a time when the Glamour Boys are sending signals that indeed they have improved and are ready to challenge the big boys again; Nasreddine Nabi's side are unbeaten in five games and are second in the league only on goal difference.
