    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune is a free agent after his contract with the Premier Soccer League side expired at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

He has played for the Glamour Boys for the last 25 years and was willing to continue with the role on the pitch.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Khune had a mixed 2023-24 campaign; he started as the third choice but Brandon Petersen's blunders saw him get elevated to become the first-choice. Khune was then suspended after a disciplinary breach which gave Bruce Bvuma an opportunity to showcase his talent.

When Khune's contract expired, the club refused to extend it, insisting he would be given another role. The former South Africa international has been stating he is ready to continue playing.

Former Amakhosi goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez has now urged the 37-year-old to carefully analyse all options before deciding on his future.

    WHAT FERNANDEZ SAID

"It is a tricky one you know, he has been at the club for what, like 20-odd years now, or whatever," he told SNL24

"He must make a decision on whether he wants to continue playing if he wants to become an ambassador of the club. It is entirely his choice and he must make that decision.

"Khune must think about the short and long term in his planning and he must do what is best for him for the long term," Fernandez concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

The Soweto Giants signed Rwanda international Fiacre Ntwari to replace Khune and the Amavubi star has since been occupying the No. 1 spot.

Despite the changes, Chiefs have not kept a clean sheet in the five Premier Soccer League matches played which might see Bvuma or Petersen getting an opportunity to impress.
