    WHAT HAPPENED?

Premier Soccer League defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns got their Carling Knockout semi-final ticket after a huge win over Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.

Masandawana got their goals through Iqraam Rayners - who scored a brace - Peter Shalulile, and Khuliso Mudau.

However, there were some who felt Lucas Ribeiro was not fouled for the Downs penalty, Shalulile scored from an offside position, and Inacio Miguel was wrongly sent off after the break.

Were they legit calls? Have a look at what former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani said.

    WAS IT A PENALTY?

Samkelo Zwane gave away possession in midfield and Ribeiro was slipped into the danger zone. The Brazilian went down and the referee did not hesitate to point to the penalty spot.

"If you are behind my friend, if you are behind Blom whatever you do it’s an infringement on the laws of the game,"  Hlungwani told SABC Sport.

"You can see that he start with the knee and he also got him on the ground there. So here, correct decision there by Luxolo Badi for giving a penalty."

    OFFSIDE GOAL BY SHALULILE?

The Namibia international then raced clear to tap in Ribeiro's cross to double the advantage. Was the forward in an offside position?

"The law says a player cannot be offside if he’s behind the ball or there’s an opponent close by," he continued.

"So, now if you look at it here you’ll see that Shalulile is behind the ball. He’s behind the ball. He’s not even in an offside position when you’re behind the ball.

"A correct decision by Zakhele Siwela not to flag because the player’s behind the ball. It complies with the laws of the game."

DID MIGUEL DESERVE A SECOND YELLOW CARD?

In the first half, Inacio Miguel was cautioned for committing a professional foul against Ribeiro before holding Shalulile in the second half, and the referee unleashed the second one.

"Now, the second one, was it necessary for him to commit this offence because I see it as a cover, but Luxolo Badi there being on top form for this match, here there’s holding an offence by Miguel on Shalulile there, but [Rushwin] Dortley is covering," Hlungwane continued.

"I don’t know why he took one for the team. To me, I think it was unnecessary but then Luxolo Badi correctly positioned, and issued a second yellow and a red card. Correct decision by Luxolo Badi," he concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

Regarding Miguel, coach Nasreddine Nabi will have to speak with him about his discipline on the pitch. Since joining Chiefs, he has been cautioned in every match he has played across all competitions.

Amakhosi have to show their mental strength to bounce back from their three-match winless streak across all competitions.
