    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs have for long been linked with Bafana Bafana central midfielder Thabo Cele who has been playing in Europe for the past eight years.

The 27-year-old has now become a free agent after parting ways with Russian side FC Fakel Voronezh.

    WHAT FAKEL VORONEZH SAID

“Due to serious health problems in the family, the midfielder and the club terminated the contract,” the club said as per iDiski Times.

“According to the agreement between Cele and the club, the footballer will only be able to play for teams from South Africa until the end of the current contract.

“We wish the player good luck in his future career, and health to Cele’s family. All the best to you, Thabo!”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Cele is now a free agent, Chiefs' priorities are not in signing a defensive midfielder.

They already have the likes of Yusuf Maart, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Edson Castillo and Njabulo Blom in that position.

Coach Nasreddine Nabi has emphasised the need to sign a striker while their defence has also been leaky.
