    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs have been struggling for a prolific scorer and are in the hunt for an attacker which could see them reviving their interest in Polokwane City winger Oswin Appollis.

But former Mamelodi Sundowns and Amakhosi striker Katlego Mphela feels Appollis alone will not be the answer to Chiefs' problems.

    WHAT MPHELA SAID

"He is a good player and can improve the team but to change the team's fortunes they don't just need one player,” Mphela told Soccer Laduma.

“We have seen this with [Gaston] Sirino. The team needs collective work to change their fortunes. You saw they brought in Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly but they could not change the team's fortunes.

“They are good players individually but they were not enough to change the fortunes." added the former Bafana Bafana forward.

"Any team that can sign Appollis can improve. Look at what he does at Bafana Bafana and also at Polokwane City.  But to change the fortune at Chiefs they need more than just signing Appollis. Obviously it will be a good signing but definitely not for changing the fortunes of the team. There is always pressure if they depend on one player.

"They need to sign at least two or three new players. A top striker can score goals for fun, a defensive midfielder and at least a winger," the Brits-born former footballer continued.

“But I think a goalkeeper can also help. I have seen Ox [Mthethwa] had a comeback in the defensive midfield part but what if he doesn't come to the party? There should be someone to cover for him. They need a box-to-box midfielder.

"A number eight who can control the midfield but I also think the team needs a versatile defender who can be comfortable in any position at the back. So, some signings in January could help change the team's fortunes.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Problems that have been bedeviling Chiefs in recent seasons seem to be playing themselves again.

The Soweto giants have a defence that has kept a clean sheet in just one of their nine competitive games across all competitions this season.

They have struggled for creativity in the middle of the park and their top goal-scorer Mududuzi Shabalala has found the back of the net just three times in nine outings.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

Amakhosi will be in Polokwane for the sixth time this season when they face Appollis' side in a Premier Soccer League match on Sunday.

It will be an opportunity for Appollis to show his worth to Amakhosi coach Nasreddine Nabi at close range.
