    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs opted to let Itumeleng Khune leave after the 2023-24 Premier Soccer League campaign.

Despite the 37-year-old's will to continue playing beyond 40 years, the Soweto giants felt he did not have the needed competitive edge to deliver owing to his age.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After finishing 10th in the 2023-24 edition, coach Nasreddine Nabi was appointed to help rebuild the team.

The Tunisian opted to bring in Fiacre Ntwari from TS Galaxy to fill the void left by the veteran stopper Khune.

Amakhosi wanted to give Khune another role at the club.

The custodian reveals how he took the news of his playing days at Chiefs being a thing of the past officially.

    WHAT KHUNE SAID

“No I wasn’t [upset], I knew the club told me the direction they were taking, I need to buy into that, I needed to support the idea the club was moving in that direction,” he opened up in his recent interview.

“Nothing personal but I’m part and parcel, I’m still family to Kaizer Chiefs," Khune added.

    AND WHAT IS MORE

Khune has further explained why he was reluctant to take a new role at the club.

"If I had to sign as a footballer for another team, I can’t be with Kaizer Chiefs, but for now, I haven’t cut ties with them, they haven’t cut ties with me, we are still in talks, that’s where we are sitting right now.

“We’re trying to find a good working relationship in a different position, going forward," Khune continued.

    WHAT NEXT?

Ntwari has not managed to keep a clean sheet so far in the five Premier Soccer League matches played.

However, Khune is confident the goalkeepers at Amakhosi will eventually rise to the occasion and inspire the team to the highest level.
