    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Orlando Pirates striker Marks Maponyane has defended Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi and said the players are to blame for the poor run in the Premier Soccer League.

Maponyane, who formerly featured for Amakhosi, also said a frequent change of coaches brings undesired results and that Chiefs must assess their players instead.

    WHAT MAPONYANE SAID

"Nabi showed a lot of promise in his first season, although there wasn't much on the table initially. When he started, the team displayed considerable energy," Maponyane told KickOff

"When they returned from Turkey, we thought something good was developing, but whatever is being cooked is not quite ready yet. It feels like it's an undercooked oxtail... or maybe mogodu [laughs].

"It shouldn’t take this long. You can tell that they were showing a lot of energy, but now they seem aimless. You can’t be aimless when you’ve been showcasing such energy. Now, suddenly, we don’t know what they are trying to achieve," he continued.

"Week after week, they have visible flaws. The goalkeeping department has been particularly problematic, as they have used three different goalkeepers in one season, yet there has been no improvement, with all of them conceding consistently.

"They should retain the coach. I believe they should keep him because the constant cycle of changing coaches doesn't bring any improvement. It's essential to assess the players at your disposal."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chiefs campaign in the league has been disappointing as they are chasing a top-eight finish and avoided relegation when Cape Town City were beaten by Mamelodi Sundowns.

However, the Glamour Boys showed resilience and defeated Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday.

This was the only trophy that Chiefs were chasing this season and have managed to lay their hands on, meaning Nabi has won something in his first season in charge.

The victory in Durban is also big, as they have dethroned their bitter rivals Pirates, who had won the cup two times in a row.
