    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates drew 0-0 with Pyramids in a Caf Champions League semi-final, first leg match at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

It was a match which saw the Egyptian visitors having two goals disallowed after a video assistant referee review.

While Pyramids coach Krunoslav Jurcic feels they were robbed, his Buccaneers counterpart Jose Riveiro says VAR was spot-on in ruling away the goals.

    WHAT RIVEIRO SAID

“We have to get used to playing with this type of technology as well, and I think in this case, the referees did a good job,” said Riveiro as per SABC Sport.

"No, no goals, there were not goals, if the referee says there were no goals, then there were no goals. So, we can't speak about disallowed goals, it's something new for us, we are not used to playing with the VAR and I understand the frustration of the opponent.

“But I'm sure once they have the opportunity to check the actions carefully, they will realise that the referee was correct, was right, unfortunately for them the situation and decision was good for Orlando Pirates."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Saturday was a day of VAR drama as Al Ahly also had two goals against Mamelodi Sundowns disallowed in another semi-final showdown at Loftus Versfeld.

The use of this refereeing technology has divided not only coaches but also fans of the teams involved.

This comes as the Confederation of African Football is being encouraged to use VAR from the group phase of their continental club competitions, and not only the knockout stages.

    WHAT NEXT PIRATES?

Up next for Pirates is a trip to Egypt, where they will meet Pyramids in the second leg of this stage of the competition on Friday.

The Buccaneers would be hoping to grab an away goal and frustrate their opponents.
