    WHAT HAPPENED?

Al Ahly head coach Jose Riveiro has discussed the main problems that worked against the Egyptian Premier League champions during their Fifa Club World Cup encounter against Inter Miami on Sunday.

The Red Devils wasted their chances that, if they were utilised, would have easily given them a healthy win over the Major Soccer League side. The African heavyweights were also lucky and must thank their goalkeeper, Mohamed El Shenawy, for making late saves that prevented them from falling.

The experienced goalkeeper made three crucial saves late in the game, including denying Lionel Messi, to make sure his side came out with at least a point.

And according to Riveiro, Al Ahly's major undoing came during transitions in the game and in the manner they defended.

    WHAT RIVEIRO SAID

“It’s a football game; it’s a game of mistakes. I think we had a decent amount of chances in the first half to put the game in a different space," Riveiro told DAZN, as per Al Jazeera, in his post-match reaction.

“Second half, we were defending a bit lower than what we wanted, and then we had some problems in the transitions as well," he added.

    WHAT IS MORE

The Spaniard also touched on their next game and stated what Al Ahly must avoid then.

“Now we need to recover. It’s difficult to speak about Palmeiras. We prepare for the game as well as we can. We are going to analyse what happened today in order to try and avoid the same mistakes," he explained.

The Egyptian heavyweights were backed by a sizeable number of fans, and Riveiro said he was shocked, as he never expected that.

“It seems like we are playing in Cairo. For me, it was a big surprise: my first game as Al Ahly coach in an official match. I am so happy to be here and representing the club in this competition," the 49-year-old tactician said.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Although his side wasted a decent number of goal-scoring chances, Riveiro should take some positives observed in the game.

After falling short with Orlando Pirates in the Caf Champions League campaign last season, the Club World Cup tournament offers the Spaniard a stage to fight for an international trophy.

His performance is expected to be highly scrutinised, especially by the club's legends, who never shy away from criticising coaches who fail to perform according to their standards.

Already, some have stated he is not the right choice to lead the perennial Champions League and Egyptian Premier League winners. However, keeping the Red Devils a competitive side and winning trophies will help Riveiro silence his doubters.

    WHAT NEXT FOR RIVEIRO?

Currently, the focus is on the ongoing Club World Cup tournament. But it is his performance in the Champions League that will be scrutinised even more, given the club's past achievements in that competition.

After the goalless draw against Inter Miami, Al Ahly will face Palmeiras in the second game of Group A.
