Khune adds voice on Chiefs-Nabi situation

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has said head coach Nasreddine Nabi deserved to have been given more time to guide the Premier Soccer League side.

Recently, Amakhosi confirmed that Nabi is not part of the team, and the Tunisian himself said he has left the Soweto giants.

However, according to Khune, the club should have kept the coach for longer because, he says, what Nabi was building was evident and should have continued.

    Unfortunate situation

“Yeah, it's unfortunate what is happening at Kaizer Chiefs. Remember, for the past 10 years, Kaizer Chiefs hasn't won silverware, and the coach now came and broke that curse," Khune said, as quoted by Soccer Laduma.

"So, I wish they could have given him more time because you can see he was building a well-oiled machine, so it's just unfortunate that things didn't go well for him,” he added.

“Hence, the club had to come to the conclusion to part ways with him. It's just an unfortunate situation. I would have loved to see him continuing with the club, but again, Kaizer Chiefs are in business."

"Players and coaches know that they wouldn't be at the clubs forever, but it's very important that when you are given an opportunity, you give it your all. And Coach Nabi did that. In his first season, you won the silverware, and people will forever remember him for that."

    Nabi's absence

The former Young Africans head coach was not available for the last two games for Chiefs: the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round against Kabuscorp SC of Angola and Marumo Gallants.

Amakhosi lost the continental game and dropped PSL points against Gallants after a 1-1 draw on Wednesday.

When his exit is officially confirmed, his reign will be associated with the achievement of ending a decade-long trophy drought at Naturena. The Nedbank Cup win was an even more symbolic achievement, as Chiefs dethroned their arch-rivals, Orlando Pirates.

    Next focus for Chiefs

The Glamour Boys are set to play the Angolan club for a decisive second-leg showdown at the FNB Stadium on September 27.

Kabuscorp enjoy a slim advantage after winning the first-leg game with a 1-0 scoreline.
