BackpagepixThemba Zwane has returned to action after spending time on the sidelines with an Achilles injury.
The 35-year-old attacker from Tembisa has made seven appearances this season and is now back just in time for the biggest challenge — the Caf Champions League final against Pyramids.
Zwane described his injury layoff as one of the most difficult periods of his career.
He revealed that former teammates like Teko Modise, Hlompho Kekana, and Sibusiso Vilakazi played a vital role in helping him stay mentally strong.
Their support reminded him that he’s not alone and that he still has a lot to offer.
Zwane’s experience and leadership are crucial as Mamelodi Sundowns aim to conquer the continent once more.
The timing of his return boosts the team’s confidence heading into their biggest game of the season.
Having Zwane back is like signing a new player at a critical moment.
Backpagepix"It was a difficult situation for me. But with the support of my family, my team, and technical staff, I managed to stay focused and I tried to do what I was supposed to do," Zwane told the media after the 2-0 victory over Magesi FC at Loftus Stadium on Sunday evening, as reported by Soccer Laduma.
"There are certain players, Vila (Sibusiso Vilakazi), Teko (Modise), Hlompho (Kekana), who always gave support, especially Vila. He was facing the same situation, so he was always trying to guide me. I feel like I did well. I managed to come back. I stayed positive."
"I always stay positive. When the coach arrived, I just tried to understand what he wanted from me. We had a chat when he arrived, and he said, 'We will wait for you to come back and decide where you are comfortable to play.' For me, it was more than enough to understand what he wants. My job was to come back stronger and try to fight for the position."
"This one is different. When we started, people doubted us. We started slow, but we managed to keep up with the pace. We tried to improve ourselves and I think we've been doing well. We pushed ourselves as a team and we won the trophy," the Bafana Bafana international said.
"It feels great. As Sundowns, we are not tired of winning. We just want to keep on going. Overall, we are happy as a team."
BackpageCoach Miguel Cardoso has been cautious with Zwane’s return and even left him out of the title-winning game against Chippa United due to the condition of the pitch.
His careful management shows just how important Zwane is to the team.
The Portuguese tactician knows that having a fully fit Zwane offers more creativity and control in midfield.
With the veteran available again, Cardoso has more flexibility and options for the final push in the Caf Champions League.
BackpageMamelodi Sundowns are preparing for their Champions League final against Pyramids, with the first leg set to be played at home.
They’ll be hoping to get a solid result to take to Cairo for the return leg.
With Zwane back and the squad brimming with confidence, the Brazilians are aiming for continental glory.
