Orlando Pirates fell 2-1 against Marumo Gallants in the Premier Soccer League game staged at Dr. Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday night.

The Buccaneers started the game as a better team, going for an early goal as Gallants took time to settle.

It took the Soweto giants just 16 minutes to open the scoring, when Patrick Maswanganyi guided home a low cross from Deon Hotto.

There were calls for a penalty in the 37th minute when Oswin Appollis was brought down by Gallants defenders, but the referee was not interested.

The hosts grabbed a deserved equaliser in the stroke of halftime as Daniel Msendami connected a Bheki Mabuza assist, giving Sipho Chaine no chance.

Despite the many scoring opportunities Bucs had in the second half, they just couldn't beat Washington Arubi in the Bahlabane Ba Ntwa's goal.

The determined hosts were then rewarded deep in the stoppages, as Jason Clifford scored from Teboho Motloung's cross to make it 2-1 and win it for Gallants.

Pirates have no points from two games, while Gallants have defied the odds to go top of the group with maximum points from two outings.

    THE MVP

One man whom Gallants should appreciate for their win is Marvin Sikhosana.

The bulky defender read Bucs moves well and ensured all the dangers were cleared. He also had good communication with Arubi to help his team avoid conceding a second goal.

    THE BIG LOSER

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou vowed to help Pirates continue from where Jose Riveiro left, but it seems things are not working in his favour.

He started well by winning the MTN8 quarter-final game against Polokwane City, which, seemingly, gave the fans a false promise.

Losing back-to-back PSL games was not in his mind and now the pressure is building.

    WHAT COMES NEXT?

Pirates have to bounce back; they have no option, but they will have to do it the hard way.

On Saturday, they host Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final to be staged at the Orlando Stadium.

For Gallants, things are looking good; they have now collected maximum points from their opening two league matches. They have time to rest before playing AmaZulu on Wednesday, August 20.
