    WHAT HAPPENED?

Last week, Orlando Pirates announced that coach Jose Riveiro will not be renewing his contract when it expires in June.

That has generated interest to see who will replace the Spaniard who carved himself a reputation as a Cup specialist.

Pitso Mosimane's name has been prominently mentioned as a possible replacement and former Pirates midfielder Mpho Makola explains why he believes the unattached veteran should take over from Riveiro.

    WHAT MAKOLA SAID

“You know what, that’s football for you. Nothing lasts forever and coach Jose brought back the smiles on Pirates’ fans," said Makola as per FARPost.

"Pirates supporters go to matches because of him and the way the team has transformed is because of him.

“I’m really happy with his contribution to our football. I hope his teachings don’t fade away within the team and its players," added the Groblersdal-born retired footballer.

“Lastly, I’m saying bring coach Pitso if you want to continue with what Jose has already built. If you want the league and to conquer Africa, then he is the right person.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mosimane has been linked with the Pirates job at a time when his most recent jobs almost tainted his image as a coach after enjoying success in other jobs outside South Africa.

Stints at Emirati side Al Wahda, Abha Club in the Saudi First Division and Iranian outfit Esteghlal in the last two years were unsuccessful short spells.

However, that has not taken away the respect he commands in the Premier Soccer League, a football environment he is very familiar with.

    WHAT NEXT FOR PIRATES?

The Buccaneers are currently searching for Riveiro's replacement, something they might want to complete before the end of the season to allow the new man enough time to start planning ahead of next season.

In the meantime, Riveiro is seized with helping Pirates reach the Caf Champions League semi-finals by taking on MC Alger in a quarter-final, second-leg at home on Wednesday.
