  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Jose Riveiro took over as Orlando Pirates coach at the beginning of the 2022-23 season.

He has since delivered five trophies for the Buccaneers, as well as guiding the team to the second-place finish in as many Premier Soccer League seasons.

The Spaniard was in charge of the Carling All-Stars team that beat Stellenbosch and Magesi FC, respectively to win the Carling Black Label Cup.

Riveiro was open to getting a chance to coach Bafana Bafana in future.

    WHAT RIVEIRO SAID

“You never know, right now my focus is 100% on the responsibility that I have, trust me, I have enough,” he responded.

“Usually, national teams used to be coaches with more experience, more kilometres in this job, but it’s also changing right now, you can see some young coaches, coaching top national teams around the world.

“Who knows? I like coaching and right now I like to do what I am doing at Orlando Pirates, to do my best when I am invited to do the same in this space, I don’t think much about what is going to happen in the future," Riveiro concluded.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Riveiro's current deal with the Soweto giants expires at the end of the current season, and it is logical to say the Bucs will want to retain him owing to what he has achieved.

After a shaky start at Bafana Bafana, coach Hugo Broos has registered some positive results.

South Africa finished third in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast at the beginning of the year. He hopes to go all the way in the 2025 edition that will be staged in Morocco.

Bafana are also in a good position to qualify for the 2026 Fifa World Cup. This might determine his future in Mzansi despite the fact that his current deal expires in 2026.

    WHAT NEXT?

The main objective for Riveiro this season will be to win the Premier Soccer League and have a good run in the Caf Confederation Cup. That will give him a head-start in his bid to have an improved deal.

Nevertheless, Broos' main target is to help Bafana play in the World Cup for the first time since 2010.
