  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Jose Riveiro was unveiled on Thursday as the new Al Ahly coach, taking over from Marcel Koller, who was dismissed after failing to meet the set objectives.

The Spaniard has served Orlando Pirates since the 2022/23 season, and has managed to help the Soweto giants become a force not only in Mzansi, but Africa at large, where they reached the Caf Champions League semi-final.

It explains why the Red Devils went for his services ahead of the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

At Pirates, Riveiro had to use the rented office in Houghton, Johannesburg, and conduct his training at Rand Stadium, which is run by the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality and managed by the Stadium Management.

Rivals Kaizer Chiefs own the Chiefs Village in Naturena, while Mamelodi Sundowns have theirs in Chloorkop.

Interestingly, Cape Town Spurs have a facility in Ikamva, completing a list of a few Mzansi clubs that own their space.

Riveiro will have the privilege of enjoying the club's facility in Cairo, which might look like a jibe against his former team.

  • WHAT RIVEIRO SAID

"I am at a European club, you lack nothing, this is what I dreamed of and wished for, to coach a team of Al-Ahli's stature," he said as quoted by YallaKora.

  • WHAT NEXT?

Riveiro has signed an initial two-year contract with Ahly with an option to extend it, but the Egyptian giants will definitely part ways with him if he struggles to deliver.

The immediate plan is to have the needed players to help him deliver in the Fifa Club World Cup that will be played in the United States from June 14 to July 13.
