    WHAT HAPPENED?

Al Ahly have appointed Jose Riveiro as their new coach.

This ends weeks of speculation that the Spaniard was on his way to Cairo after leaving Orlando Pirates.

Riveiro's backroom staff includes fitness trainer Miguel Bellver Esteve, who left Pirates in 2023 and Carlos Nodar Paz, who will serve as one of Riveiro's assistants.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

For three seasons, Riveiro was in an environment where his employers were patient with him.

Despite failing to break Mamelodi Sundowns' supremacy in the Premier Soccer League, Pirates were still keen on retaining the Spaniard.

He now goes into the territory where his predecessor, Marcel Koller, instantly became a villain after Al Ahly were eliminated from the Caf Champions League at the semi-final stage after being back-to-back African champions.
