    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs have been after the signature of midfielder Sphephelo Sithole as they seek to beef up their central midfield.

The defensive linkman is currently playing for Portuguese side Primeira Liga on loan from CD Tondela.

Sithole's agent Manuel Tomas has given an update on Chiefs' position on the Bafana Bafana star.

    WHAT TOMAS SAID

“In December, yes, we received some calls from the club [Chiefs],” Tomas told FARPost.

“We don’t know [what’s going to happen], but it’s football. But we don’t have an official offer from Chiefs for Sithole.

“It was just the talks with the club and the people from the club, but they haven’t made an official offer," added the agent.

“When the loan ends, we don’t know the future,” Sithole’s agent added. “As he recovers from the injury, when he’s 100%, the future will guide us. We will not force nothing.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sithole is currently injured and last featured for Gil Vicente in August 2024 after being injured while on Bafana Bafana duty.

His move to Chiefs would depend on coach Nasreddine Nabi's needs in central midfield.

Should Njabulo Blom return to his Major League Soccer League club, there could be space for Sithole in a Chiefs central midfield which also has the likes of Thabo Cele, Yusuf Maart, Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Samkelo Zwane.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SITHOLE?

When he recovers from injury, it is to be seen if Sithole will get himself back into the Bafana setup.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals are on the horizon and prior to that, it is likely going to be a competitive period with players jostling for places to travel to Morocco as Sithole seeks to return to the competition he tasted at the last edition.
