Richards Bay kept their hopes of lifting the Carling Knockout Cup alive following a 5-4 win over Cape Town City on penalties at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The hosts were dominant in possession in most parts of the game, but they could not score throughout. On the other hand, the Cape Town-based outfit created plenty of chances but failed to make use of them.
The 90 minutes could not separate the two sides. Moreover, Brandon Truter's side looked more dangerous in extra time, but luck was not on their side.
The Natal Rich Boys finished the game with ten men after Langelihle Mhlongo was shown a red card in stoppage time during extra time. The game needed penalties to settle it following a goalless draw in regulation time.
In the shootout, Kenyan goalkeeper Ian Otieno put in an effort and saved one penalty to help his side progress to the next round.
Richards Bay advanced to the semi-finals of a major cup competition for the second year running.
