    WHAT HAPPENED?

Patrick Maswanganyi, Deon Hotto and Tshepang Moremi found the back of the net as Orlando Pirates cruised to a 3-0 away win over Chippa United in Gqeberha on Sunday, 31 August.

The Buccaneers were dominant throughout and despite the three goals, they could have added more had they been sharper in front of goal. Head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou acknowledged this in his post-match analysis.

    WHAT OUADDOU SAID?

“I’m happy about the performance of the boys, we wanted to come here to take the three points, it was crucial for us when you look at the result yesterday. It was very important. I said that before the game,” Ouaddou told SuperSport TV.

“But we have to understand that we have to give thanks to the fans but I’m not somebody who likes to enjoy like that, I like goals. If we can put five, six goals we have to put six goals. So, congratulations to my boys but in the last 20 minutes. I don’t like sterile possession, I want to go forward.

"I think it was a very important win before the break but at the same time to stay closer to our rivals and to be at the top of the league table. We have some ambitions with the club so it was very important to come and grab nine points before the break,” he concluded.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The win lifted Pirates to fifth place in the Premier Soccer League, providing a much-needed confidence boost after a shaky start to the season.

The Soweto giants are now looking to close the gap on rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, who occupy second and third place, respectively.

    WHAT’S NEXT FOR PIRATES?

The clash against the Chilli Boys was Pirates’ final match before the international break. However, seven Buccaneers players have been called up for national duty as Bafana Bafana prepare to face Lesotho and Nigeria in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Upon their return, Ouaddou’s side will turn their attention to the MTN8 final against Stellenbosch on Saturday, 13 September.
