  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns are ready for the Fifa Club World Cup that will be played from June 14 to July 13 in the United States.

The Premier Soccer League champions made it to the prestigious global competition alongside Al Ahly, Esperance, and Wydad Athletic Club.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sundowns have been placed in Group F alongside Fluminense, Borussia Dortmund, and Ulsan HD.

This is a massive stage that every player wishes to be involved in, but it definitely won't be the case.

Neo Maema, who has been linked to Kaizer Chiefs severally, is among the players who have been given the opportunity by Masandawana to dine with the big boys.

The 29-year-old has been used sparingly by coach Miguel Cardoso this season, making just 17 appearances across all competitions.

However, it matters not since he has made the final squad for the Club World Cup.

    WHAT MAEMA SAID

“I always knew that I'd make the squad; it's not being arrogant, but I feel like this is the work of the players that were here two years ago," he told the media.

"We qualified for the Club World Cup two seasons ago, I think. When you're still on the team, you have to eat the fruit of the work that you've put in.

“I am happy to make the squad, but also disappointed for the ones who didn't make it, but it's a competition, it's a big club. I feel for them because they're my brothers,'' Maema concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

Maema played a vital role in helping South Africa qualify for the 2024 Chan that will be held jointly by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

He will be hoping to have the same impact on the Brazilians, but that will only happen if coach Miguel Cardoso trusts him.

The first assignment for Downs will be on Wednesday, June 18, against Ulsan HD.
