    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro gave Relebohile Mofokeng his senior debut at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Since then, the now 20-year-old has not looked back with his consistent display for the Soweto giants.

He is also seen as South Africa's next big thing due to his undeniable talent.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Prior to joining Orlando Pirates, Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs had a chance to land the skilled attacker.

At just 13, the fleet-footed creative attacker had already made a name at the Stars of Africa Academy.

Respected sports photographer Pitsi 'Vini Snap' Matlou requested the Glamour Boys to consider sending their scouts to Sharpeville to have a look at the player but his call was ignored.

He explained what he saw to the youngster and why he was sure Mofokeng was destined to go places.

    WHAT MATLOU SAID

"With Rele, I first spotted him, I think he was 13, I remember calling some of the scouts at Kaizer Chiefs to say, 'Hey, guys you need to come to Sharpeville, there's this young boy here doing magic,'" he told 947's MSW.

"Fast forward it's 2022, he's at School of Excellence but I'm hosting a tournament and one of the teams invited him, fast forward I'm seeing talent I've never seen before.

"Even on my posts, I told them I'm seeing the prime Thulani Serero in this kid. So 'my people in football please come do something with this boy'. Our relationship [with Mofokeng] is good. I'm a supportive person, Rele doesn't owe me anything," Matlou continued.

"I did that through my own will. Seeing him do what he's doing now makes me really happy."

    WHAT NEXT?

Another star who Chiefs refused to give a chance was Patrick Maswanganyi who is now a factor at Bucs.

The two incidents undermine Chiefs scouting department meaning the management should consider making changes.

Amakhosi are currently rebuilding under coach Nasreddine Nabi.
