Good news for Premier Soccer League - 'VAR is in its final stages of adjudication, it is coming! It is coming! The money is there': Gayton McKenzie confirms

There have been calls for VAR in the Premier Soccer League as Mzansi struggles to align itself with the elite tiers in Africa and the world at large.

Football lovers in the country expected VAR to be introduced in the country prior to the 2025/26 season.

However, it has not been the case, with no one from the authorities coming clean on this issue.   

Clubs have been crying foul about what they term as poor officiating in the PSL, as some crucial decisions decide the outcomes of matches.

VAR is meant to reduce that and make the league even more credible.  

The wait is almost over, according to Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie, who has been pushing for the technology to be introduced. 

“VAR is in its final stages of adjudication, it is coming. It is coming. The money is there," McKenzie told the media.

"SAFA is doing the adjudication; this is now in the final stages. Out of my hands, FIFA requires that."

The chairman of the SAFA Referees Committee, Victor Gomes, has confirmed the steps taken to make the project a reality. 

“We have been working hard to get this project off the ground,” he stated. 

 “When I was appointed the SAFA Referees Committee chair, one of my main priorities was to introduce VAR, and I am glad to say, soon this will be a reality," he concluded.     

Now that the 2025/26 season has started without VAR, it is not clear whether the technology will be introduced midway through the campaign.  

Regardless of how it pans out, if it is invented in the PSL, officials will have an easy time making critical decisions.
