  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates recently confirmed the exit of several players in their bid to strengthen the squad ahead of a busy 2025/26.

Among the players released are defenders Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane, who, recently, struggled to feature for the club owing to injuries.

The Buccaneers opted against renewing their contracts and are in the market for replacements.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The duo has been heavily linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs, who are rebuilding after recent struggles.

While Mako is seen as a direct replacement for Edmilson Dove, Monyane has been tipped to improve the right-back department that currently has the likes of Reeve Frosler and Dillan Solomons.

Some critics feel Monyane is not the right person for the Glamour Boys.

However, former Bucs coach Augusto Palacios believes Monyane is quality and Amakhosi will benefit.

    WHAT PALACIOS SAID

"I know Thabiso [Monyane] from when he joined Pirates and he is a quality player who can play in different positions," he told SNL24.

"I really don't know what happened for him to leave. Whether his contract was not renewed or he just wanted to leave, I don't think it's the right time.

"And if he really joins Chiefs, it's better because there is the same challenge as at Pirates," Palacios added.

"He can play his game and go back to the national team, Bafana Bafana.

"He deserves to be playing on the national team. If Chiefs sign him, it will be a good signing for them," he concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

Chiefs haven't said anything regarding the duo, but chances are high that players will be announced before they leave for the Netherlands for pre-season.

It will be interesting to see how Nasreddine Nabi is rebuilding his squad ahead of the forthcoming campaign, where he has no option but to deliver, especially in the Premier Soccer League.
