Orlando Pirates have failed to reach the final of the Caf Champions League after going down 3-2 to Pyramids FC at the 30 June Stadium on Friday night.
The first leg ended in a 0-0 draw, meaning the second leg became a decisive encounter, and Pyramids came out on top, ending Pirates' dream.
Meanwhile, Deon Hotto, with a precise cross into the box, found Evidence Makgopa, whose shot was, however, weak and straight to the goalkeeper in the seventh minute.
Bucs had another chance to break the deadlock in the 14th minute, but Pyramids' goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy did well to deny Makgopa when he cleared using his foot in a crowded penalty area.
After moments of dominance, Pirates finally broke the deadlock when unmarked Relebohile Mofokeng fired past El Shenawy in the 45th minute. It was a case of good use of a set piece; Hotto delivered a good ball into the area, Pyramids struggled to clear, and the ball found itself on the path of Mofokeng, who scored a good goal to complicate matters for the home side.
Pyramids equalised quite quickly, with Kaizer Chiefs' transfer target Mayele forcing the ball into the net in the first minute of added time of the first half.
Mohau Nkota restored Pirates' lead with a magnificent goal in the 52nd minute. The visitors launched a counterattack, which was momentarily stopped, but Nkota collected the ball and fired a ferocious shot past El Shenawy.
Pyramids restored parity almost immediately again as Ramadan Sobhi scored with a powerful header past Sipho Chaine in the 57th minute.
Mayele scored his second goal of the game in the 84th minute to all but secure Pyramids place in the final after winning the tie 3-2 on aggregate.
Pyramids FCTHE MVP
Mayele proved why he is a top transfer target for big clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs. His two goals against the Bucs will surely make him even more attractive for clubs that are keen to strengthen their striking departments.
BackpageTHE BIG LOSER
Jose Riveiro has failed to guide Pirates to the final of the Champions League.
This was surely his top priority, especially since his exit has been confirmed. Now he has two titles to fight for, the Premier Soccer League and the Nedbank Cup.
