    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates started the season across all competitions quite well, and even successfully defended their MTN8.

They also reached the Caf Champions League semi-final but narrowly lost against Pyramids FC of Egypt, who will play Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.

Bucs have also reached the Nedbank Cup final, where they are scheduled to play Kaizer Chiefs on May 10.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Having gone for more than a decade without winning the Premier Soccer League, the Bucs faithful felt it was their season to dethrone Sundowns.

However, they have been dropping points in matches they should have easily won.

The recent setback was on Wednesday when they fell against Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium by a solitary goal.

They are now 12 points behind leaders Masandawana, who have played two games more.

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye believes Bucs have themselves to blame for what happened.

    WHAT KHANYE SAID

“It’s shocking because the coach is still chasing the league,” he told iDiski Times.

“Remember, before the game, the league was still open. I mean in as much as I said Sundowns will win, the league was still open. Anything could happen to Sundowns, I’m referring to their remaining games.

“Pirates have themselves to blame. They have disadvantaged themselves by losing today’s game," Khanye continued.

“The reason I have issues with Jose Riveiro, yes the guy has done well for Orlando Pirates he won trophies, he took out the best out of players, he’s playing youngsters and Pirates looks exciting.

“But he lost crucial games. His biggest challenge this season is losing games he has no business losing," he concluded.

  • WHAT NEXT?

Pirates' PSL fate is not in their hands anymore, they have to hope Masandawana drop points in their remaining games for them to stand a chance to deliver.

However, Bucs have to do their part by winning their games, starting with this Saturday when they play Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby.
