    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has explained how he stayed in bed for two weeks, crying daily after Amakhosi management opted against handing him a new contract.

The veteran custodian is currently without a club amid reports Chiefs plan to give him a new role at Naturena.

While he has been rumoured to have been offered a marketing job by Chiefs, Khune says he is also not keen on taking up a role as goalkeeper coach.

    WHAT KHUNE SAID

“We are still in talks, but to be honest, I have never prepared myself for things to happen the way they did at the age of 37,” Khune said as per Sowetan Live.

“I didn't imagine things turning up this way. I always thought I would get one more season until maybe I turn 39 or 40. It didn't happen and I didn't see myself becoming a goalkeeper coach. It has always been my dream to play football as much as I can and after retirement stay away from football.

“I'm still young to be a goalkeeper coach and I didn't see it coming this early, but like I said, I will need some time just to stay away from thinking too much and focus on a job at hand.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Khune was a rare one club man in modern football, turning out for Chiefs in his entire career and being a professional player there for 20 years.

With the goalkeeper expressing interest to continue playing, it remains to be seen if he would join another club in South Africa, or beyond. But as the months pass since he last played or trained it is unlikely.

The Soweto giants currently have Fiacre Ntwati, Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen as the most notable goalkeepers on the books, and despite a recent fan outcry calling for Khune's return with Chiefs leaking goals, there is little room for Khune to make a triumphant return to the playing field in The Glamour Boys colours.

    WHAT NEXT FOR KHUNE?

Khune has seemingly not given up on his desire to play again despite his beloved Kaizer Chiefs stance.

The club has been vocal in wanting to retain Khune in a coaching or marketing role but we do not seem to be anywhere close to a resolution yet.

Only Khune can decide his future with or without Chiefs but he still seems pained at the manner in which his playing career ended.
