Forget Lucas Ribeiro! Kekana nominates Orlando Pirates star for the Player of the Season Award - 'Without him, the Buccaneers were nowhere'

The Premier Soccer League season is almost ending; while some teams are chasing their targets, Mamelodi Sundowns have already been crowned.

Orlando Pirates are set to finish second for the third time in a row.

Some teams like Sekhukhune United and Stellenbosch are chasing the Caf Confederation Cup places, while Kaizer Chiefs are hoping to qualify for MTN8.

Lucas Ribeiro, who has scored 16 goals and managed nine assists in the 27 games played, has been tipped to win the Player of the Season Award.

However, former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana believes Bucs midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula deserves the award.

He argues the 35-year-old was literally running the midfield for the club and should be rewarded for that.

“[Makhaula] is my Player for the Season, there was no Pirates without this player, and I’ll tell you why, he gave them stability in the midfield," he told Soccer Zone.

“Those who played in the midfield at the highest level will tell you that without this man Pirates were nowhere because he gave them stability.

“You know, he was ready to do the dirty job for Orlando Pirates. There is no [Relebohile Mofokeng] without Makhaula," Kekana concluded.

The PSL's Award Gala will be held later this year owing to Sundowns' engagements in international assignments.

Iqraam Rayners, Ribeiro, and Mofokeng are some of the players rumoured to be on the list for the award.
