    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs signed players like Nkanyiso Shinga, Ethan Chislett, Flavio Silva, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane.

They then had a pre-season camp in the Netherlands, where they won just one of their five friendly games before losing the Toyota Cup to Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.

Former Amakhosi winger Junior Khanye, who is a football analyst on iDiski Times, is not convinced by the Soweto giants' pre-season as well as their new signings.

    WHAT KHANYE SAID

“Based on what I’ve seen, I’m disappointed in how pre-season has gone for Kaizer Chiefs," said Khanye as per Soccer Laduma.

"Yes, results aren’t very important during pre-season, but you still have to win some to give people hope.

“I’m not saying they should have won all the games, it’s pre-season after all, but comparing them to Pirates, I’m really disappointed. Pirates played four friendlies, won one, drew two and lost one. That’s a much better showing in my opinion.

“So far, I haven’t been convinced with the players that Chiefs have signed, and only time will tell about them," added the former South Africa Under-20 star.

“I still maintain, had Chiefs signed Sipho Mbule, he would make a big difference. Obviously, he can’t do it alone, and they’d still need to add two or three other players of that quality, but Mbule would’ve been a great step in the right direction.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After winning the Nedbank Cup last season, Amakhosi heightened expectations on them to build on that achievement, which came after 10 trophyless years.

That places the squad built by coach Nasreddine Nabi under pressure to win more pieces of silverware in the upcoming season.

Much of the scrutiny is on whether the Tunisian has come up with a team competitive enough to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns' supremacy in domestic football.

The Soweto giants will also be participating in the CAF Confederation Cup, where there could be bigger tasks.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

After finishing outside the top-half of the Premier Soccer League last season, Chiefs will not be in action this weekend when the MTN8 kicks off.

They will now have to wait for the beginning of the PSL season and Khanye have blasted Nabi's men for missing out on the top-eight competition.

“As we speak, the top teams in the league are playing this weekend in the MTN8, and Chiefs aren’t. That’s uncalled for, for a brand like Kaizer Chiefs,” he said.
