    WHAT HAPPENED?

After a strong start to his senior career, Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s rise continues as he impresses for both club and country.

The 19-year-old delivered standout performances in the national under-20 friendlies against Botswana, showcasing his talent on an international stage.

He has already won man-of-the-match awards, scored his first senior goal, and now finds himself in Algeria for the biggest game of his journey so far.

As part of Orlando Pirates’ squad for their Caf Champions League quarter-final against MC Alger, he has a chance to make history.

Former Buccaneers goalkeeper Thabang Stemmer has spoken highly of the youngster’s abilities, believing he has what it takes to perform at this level.

All eyes will be on Mbokazi as he prepares for a potentially career-defining moment.

    WHAT STEMMER SAID

"The boy has proven his quality, so it wouldn't make sense to put him on the bench when his combination with Nkosinathi Sibisi has been working so well," said Stemmer as reported by Kickoff.

"I don't think he will face any problems against MC Alger. Just like Relebohile Mofokeng, this boy is well-prepared. These are the types of players who enjoy playing because they are not affected by pressure; they should be kept on the pitch.

"Such players can perform at any time and at any level. His combination with Sibisi is the strongest. He keeps it simple; he focuses on marking and releasing the ball.

"If you are talented, nothing will disturb you, no matter the level of competition. Mbulelo Mabizela was thrown into the deep end and ended up at Tottenham Hotspur.

"Age is just a number," says the Soweto-born man.

"At least he will be playing alongside someone who is also in form."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With under-20 national team coach Raymond Mdaka set to announce his squad for the upcoming Afcon in Ivory Coast, a key decision looms over Mbokazi’s availability.

Given his recent promotion under Jose Riveiro, the question remains whether he will be released to join his peers in the tournament.

His performances have made him a standout candidate, but Pirates might prefer to keep him for their continental campaign.
