    WHAT HAPPENED?

Jose Riveiro recently left Orlando Pirates to join Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

The 49-year-old departed after winning five cup finals but never managed to get The Bucs to league title or continental glory, but now goes to one of the most demanding clubs on the continent where nothing short of winning the Egyptian Premier League and Caf Champions League are accepted as success.

However the Spaniard believes he knows what he has got himself into and has the tools to be successful.

    WHAT RIVEIRO SAID

“I am an expert, I know that I came here with a different culture," said Riveiro as per FARPost.

"And I know that here people have a different understanding of football. But I accept the challenges from the club. And I know that I will face many challenges. But I learnt from my previous experience that I have to agree with this new culture.

"And any other culture I will face or live with. And the culture of Al Ahly, I know it well. I knew it before I came here," added the Spaniard.

"The first and the last culture of the club is to win all the championships you can participate in. And I know that I’m at a big club. I want to win all the championships available in front of me.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

At Pirates, Riveiro was at a club which was patient with him during his three seasons there.

He failed to win the Premier Soccer League during his time with the Buccaneers but he was still adored.

The Spaniard now joins a club which sacked his predecessor Marcel Koller for losing the Caf Champions League at the semi-final stage despite winning two straight continental titles.

    WHAT NEXT FOR RIVEIRO?

The upcoming Fifa Club World Cup will serve as a test for Riveiro on his capacity to lead the Cairo giants.

An unimpressive outing might make the impatient Al Ahly fans turn against him ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The Club of the Century meet Lionel Messi's Inter Miami, Brazil's Palmeiras and Portuguese giants FC Porto in Group A.
